Regulation

The toolbox

Practical things you can do right now — for yourself or with your child — to help a wobbly nervous system find safety again. Try one. There's no wrong answer.

Square breathing

Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat 4 times. Trace a square in the air with your finger as you go.

Cold reset

Splash cold water on your face, hold an ice cube, or pop your hands under a cold tap for 30 seconds. This calms the nervous system fast.

5-4-3-2-1 grounding

Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. Bring yourself back to right now.

Heavy work

Push against a wall for 10 seconds. Carry something heavy across the room. Big squeezes and crashes help the body feel safe.

Hum or sing

Humming a low note for a long breath activates the vagus nerve. Try humming your favourite song very slowly.

Co-regulate first

If your child is dysregulated, regulate yourself first. Slow your breath, soften your shoulders, lower your voice. Calm is contagious.

Remember

Behaviour is communication. A dysregulated child is not giving you a hard time — they're having a hard time. Connection before correction, every time.
